Ingredients

  • Toor dal (1 cup)
  • Water (2-1/2 cups)
  • Ghee (3 tbs)
  • Chopped tomatoes (1 cup)
  • Salt (1-1/2 tsp)
  • Turmeric (1/4 tsp)
  • Cumin seeds (1/2 tsp)
  • Mustard seeds (1/2 tsp)
  • Bay leaves (2)
  • Green chili (1 tbs chopped)
  • Ginger (2 tsp shredded)
  • Cilantro (2 tbs)
  • Red pepper (1/2 tsp)
  • Sugar (1 tsp)
  • Garam masala (1/4 tsp)

Instructions

Steps

  1. Rinse and soak toor dal in about 3 cups of water for at least 1 hour until it doubles in volume. Drain the water afterward.
  2. In a pot, combine the soaked dal with 2-1/2 cups of water, salt, and turmeric. Cook over medium-high heat until the dal is soft and has a thick, soup-like consistency, which takes around 30 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, in a frying pan, heat ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Once they begin to crackle, add bay leaves, green chili, ginger, and red pepper. Stir for a few seconds until fragrant.
  4. Incorporate chopped tomatoes, salt, and sugar into the pan. Cook until the tomatoes are tender and mushy.
  5. Mix in cilantro and garam masala, cooking for about a minute.
  6. Pour this seasoning over the cooked dal, mix well, and let it cook for an additional minute.
  7. Serve hot with naan or rice.
