- In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, combine 1 litre of milk, 300g of sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda.
- Cook the mixture over low heat, stirring continuously to avoid burning.
- Keep cooking and stirring frequently until it thickens and turns a caramel color, which should take about 1-2 hours.
- Once thickened, add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and stir well.
- Allow the dulce de leche to cool before transferring it to a jar; it will continue to thicken as it cools.
